Blogging Lists: Job Boards for Freelance Writers

66

By Patti Riggs Hale

When I first began trying to make my living freelancing, I was appalled to learn when I typed in the search terms in Google that there was not one definitive place to go to find exactly what I wanted to know--just how I was going to make money writing online or a list of websites that paid for freelance writing.

After searching high and low and getting a little bit of information here and a little bit of information there, I learned there were many different ways to earn money from freelance writing which I am learning more and more about everyday. As I accumulated this information and a long list of websites, I began organizing these into different categories based on how they pay--upfront or revenue sharing, what they paid for--reviews, micro tasks or posts, how a freelancer got the job--by bid or by querying and this category--job boards for freelance writing.

Since making and using this list of job boards, I have been able to eliminate many of the websites initially listed as either wastes of time, no longer active, or simply unverifiable because they require a fee that I am not willing to pay and therefore cannot recommend.

What follows is the "culled down" version of my original list along with notes about any additional information or impressions I have learned using them.

The truth is I do not go through every one of these lists daily since 1) it would take too much of my time and 2) many of the lists are just duplications of each other, having all used the same sources (Craigslist for one). Knowing this, I tend to try to go to Craigslist myself before these lists come out to try to beat the "herd".

Many of the older job boards, however, have their own sources or go to the source itself so you can still find "original" information. In addition, there are sites that are invaluable just because of the resources or forums that are helpful to writers.

My only complaint about these job boards is that when the cattle call hits one of these lists I am not the only person receiving this information, but such is life. Since applying for one of these job board jobs--as well as any freelance writing job for that matter-- is very competitive, I would recommend that one of the first things a new freelance writer do is work on putting together an online portfolio of samples of your writing using places like Hub Pages and other "revenue sharing" but free sites. This along with rewriting your resume to emphasize all of your writing experience is one of the best ways to get your first freelance writing job.

These job boards have both regular paying jobs for writers and freelancing jobs that pay. It is still my impression that they represent the higher paying freelance revenue jobs available in the field, which is why they may be so competitive.

As always, I will be updating these sites as I find more sites of interest and welcome any additions or corrections. Stay tuned!

I have not found that many job offers under the heading, writer/edit, I have searched under but still believe this site is worth checking occasionally.

Freelance Job Openings

http://www.freelancejobopenings.com/

I still like this job board if for no other reason than their policy of only accepting job ads that pay and include a salary, payment terms or rate in their ad. I have not received a job offer from here but have seen several that I thought worth applying for so have not written it off my list yet as a waste of my time.
