BloggingLists: Writing for Websites that Pay

68

By Patti Riggs Hale

One of the first things I wanted to find when I started freelancing was a list of writers websites that pay me for writing jobs. I Googled, I Yahooed and I Binged, but I could never find the definitive list I was looking for, partly because I was not using the right search terms. As it turns out, there are several different classifications of websites that pay for your writing:

  1. Writing for Content Mills that market your writing to websites needing fresh copy for their websites for ridiculous pay.
  2. Bidding on writing projects on odesk.com and elance.com at ridiculous prices.
  3. Writing for Pay for Review sites that require you to have your own ranked website or blog
  4. Revenue sharing websites that give you a free blog and share the revenue from affiliate marketing with you
  5. Individual websites that pay that you must seek out, query and submit your writing to just as you would any offline publication.

I will add to, correct and update this list as I investigate the different categories and websites that pay listed. Please feel free to add to/correct/share your experiences writing for any websites that pay for the information I have already posted.

I am adding the Google Page Ranks for the sites. This PR will not help those who take ghostwriting jobs since you will not be able to link to your work. However, in a later list of websites that pay by revenue sharing, the PR will make a difference in possible residual income/linkbuilding back to your own blog.

Since this is a work in progress, please check back often to see what I have added!

Websites that Pay

Associated Content from Yahoo PR 8

My Experience:
This site will pay $1-20 upfront for original article writing claimed from the assignment desk for use on Yahoo’s other properties if ghostwriting (using a pen name, no link allowed). I have not written one of these articles yet, but stayed tuned.

Yahoo will also pay $1.50 per 1000 views for articles (do not have to be original) on your own contributor’s page. Links to your websites allowed in your author’s profile. Here is my first article resubmitted from my personal wordpress.com blog: associatedcontent.com/article/8181979/make_it_right.html

Associated Content classified this article as creative writing/memoirs so the assignments available to me so far deal with writing poetry and short stories. This will change, I believe when I submit another article with different content.
UPDATE: I now have 2 pages published--both "reprints" of articles from other sites. I have not done any "socializing" within the contributor's network nor have I promoted my articles on here so my earnings for the month was $.05! Even though I have another article published about content marketing, my assignment choices are still about writing poems and short stories. I did submit an article that had not been published anywhere and it was reviewed for upfront payment but declined because there were already articles about the same subject on their website. I was able to publish it anyway for revenue sharing.

Pay So Far: .05

Bottom Line/Where to Sign Up
Pays: $1.50 per 1000 views OR if accepted as a ghostwriter $1-20 per article and $1.50 per 1000 views

: I have applied and I have been accepted as a desktop publishing contributor and I am working on my first article now.
UPDATE 7/31/11: I now have 4 articles published and will be able to write 5 more for the month of August. (New writers are capped at 5 articles for the first 30 days which is a bummer) So far I am really liking the whole process and the editors who are helping me make my articles more SEO friendly.

Factoidz PR4
My Experience
: I have been accepted as a Factoidz writer but have not submitted anything so far.
UPDATE: I did pick one of the article suggestions reviewing Photo Book suppliers, thinking it would qualify for the $30 product reviews but it didn't. Since I have been accepted, there has been one product review open reviewing a payday loan company that I was not much interested in doing. Also, there is a feature for comparing two products to write product reviews for which are mostly beauty sites that I'm not familiar with. Just being too picky I guess! I am allowed to write my own Factoidz for revenue sharing and no up front pay, just haven't done that yet. There is an interesting feature where you get paid to do backlinks that I haven't tried yet. Still figuring that one out, lol!

Textbroker Ghostwriting, no link
My Experience: I signed up for an account and received an email that asked me to confirm my email and log in. I was given my choice of four topics to write about in 150-250 words. I wrote about sight seeing in my home town. An hour or two after I submitted my writing sample I was approved to write at the 4 star level. I have written 5 articles and all 5 have been sold so I've made a little less than $30. The five articles, however were on about the same subject and I was able to knock them out in very little time. There is also a big selection of topics,
UPDATE: After writing 5 articles, my account was put on hold to evaluate my ranking which is standard, and the message blocking my account said it may take up to 7 days for the editors to do the evaluation. I know my evaluation took more than 2 weeks. Even though all five articles were snapped up and sold as quickly as I could write them, they were rated down because of a comma error in 3 of them and an EXTRA space in the 4th! There is nothing in the guidelines that I downloaded about this interpretation of the comma rule which is in conflict with the AP Style they supposedly adhere to. However, after getting ranked down, I did find a blurb about it on their blog which says that regardless of how few words are at the beginning of the sentence, you must have a comma. LOL! Now, if I write for them, it will be at the 3 star level---NOT!
In an attempt to be fair I am adding a link from a fellow Hub Pages writer who does quite well with textbroker: nybride710.hubpages.com/hub/textbrokerfeatures

Thanks, louromano Let us know how it works out.

Also Factoidz is now http://knoji.com. Rather odd that they changed names since they will have to start all over in getting ranked. However, according to my Page Rank toolbar, Factoidz is no longer a PR4 (now 0)and my guess is that Google deindexed it under that name so they switched to a new name.

Thanks Patti for the update on the lists. I am taking another read to see if there are new websites to which I have not yet applied. Your links are helpful!

Doreen also reminded me to update the entry about Bright Hub (thanks Doreen!) I would do a re-edit but every time I do Hub Pages keeps my hubs hung up for a week and I lose revenue.

Bright Hub is no longer taking writers. Luckily, I didn't have a great many articles there before they pulled the plug and stopped paying ppv's.

Another change that needs to be noted is that Associated Content is now YahooVoices.com. Apparently they purged a lot of articles when they made the move. My 3 are still there and I've gotten .50 cents in page views!Lol

Christy, I have applied there but haven't heard anything back from them. So many of these type websites started cutting back.

There's another one that Doreen and another person on WP told me about--Media Piston. Have you heard of that one?

Concise list. Thank you for sharing your experience. Most articles like these don't give real feedback just link up the sites.

You have given me something to think about as I continue in my quest to find the right online companies to join. Full time pay is hard to come by online. I wish you the best, sounds interesting.

This is a long list, Patti. I've written for some of them, but HubPages is the place I decided to call home. It is prudent though to have diversity, if generating income is your primary goal. I'd bookmark this hub for an in-depth read later on. Thank you :)

But you're right to say out loud that the garbage is ridiculous. I keep hoping that the more people call them out on it, the less they'll allow that sort of thing. It doesn't help the general reputation of freelance writers at all. But the thing is, people keep bidding. The free marketplace has spoken.

Gee! Thanks ProFreelance and truthfornow! I appreciate you commenting! I know I have a lot to learn but while I'm learning I thought I might as well share my experiences.

I agree ProFreelance that Elance.com seems to be much better than odesk and you're right there does seem to be a need for editors to rewrite/edit the garbage the employers paid $2 an hour to write.

Nice Hub! Most of us have worked with Elance too. There are some good writing projects posted there by people who actually know what a good writer is worth, but you're right about many of them being ridiculous. I am not taking up an hour of my time for only $1. That's a big reason our group was formed in the first place.

The good news about sites like that is that rewriters and editors make decent money cleaning up after those projects when the buyers realize that they got what they paid for.

Looking forward to seeing what's next from you!
